April Financial Update

Highland Park Pres Family,

Over the past few years we have been blessed by the remarkable generosity of a strong and growing congregation. Thank you for your continued faithfulness in the midst of these extraordinary times. We also want to address some of the more pressing questions you may have about the church, our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and other more financial-related issues. Additionally, our website hppres.org, has all the most updated information, as well as resources for those who need help.

What is the church doing in outreach and compassion? This unprecedented time presents unprecedented opportunities for HP Pres to share the love of Jesus and respond to peoples’ tangible needs for healing and hope. We are increasing our work of compassion and mercy for the most vulnerable in our congregation and throughout our city as we tighten operational expenses to get the most impact from every dollar. Here are some examples:

  • We are partnering with key ministries to provide thousands of meals to first responders, masks and other protective materials to healthcare workers, and to support our strategic mission partners in their outreach efforts. By giving to Highland Park Pres, you are supporting our mission of helping people find and follow Jesus, and serving those who are most vulnerable in our city and world. Thank you for your generosity, which enables us to extend compassion and hope to those affected by COVID-19.
  • Our deacons, elders, and staff are connecting with every high risk and isolated member of our congregation through phone calls, letter writing, delivering groceries and communion elements.
  • We are reaching more people than ever through our online worship experience–over 7,200 unique viewers joined us last Sunday!
  • Technology has allowed us to continue and increase our ministry footprint. Last week, more than 1,000 people engaged with a Bible study, small group, prayer group, or Sunday class via platforms like Zoom.

Where do we stand with the budget? In recent years, our Session and finance teams have worked diligently to steward the church’s resources and build a sound financial base. At the end of February, we were ahead of budget in our giving and below budget in our spending. So, we entered this crisis in healthy shape. However, as you might expect, giving to the budget has been impacted during this crisis. We are currently re-evaluating all aspects of our spending very closely. We want to continue to operate as God has called us, but to do it with the utmost stewardship of his resources you have so faithfully entrusted to us as a church.

What’s the situation with the Transform Project? At this point the Transform construction is on schedule and work continues. Over $65 million in gifts have already been received, which is a true blessing. We will send out a separate Transform update in the near future.

What can I do as a member to help? First, pray for our leaders, staff, and congregation. Prayer is not just an afterthought—it is the work of God’s people, especially in times like this. Secondly, be bold in connecting with others. Don’t let social distancing become spiritual or relational distancing. Draw closer together and then tell us how you are doing. Finally, join in on the many online prayer gatherings, growth courses, and opportunities for spiritual formation. See the latest serving opportunities at hppres.org/give-help.

What about my giving? As you are able or feel led to give, the most impactful thing you can do is to continue supporting our general budget as a church. The need for a strong and outward-facing church is more important now than ever.

  • Consider using online giving by either following the instructions at hppres.org/give or by texting HPPRES to 77977.
  • If you’d like to give above and beyond your ongoing faithful support of the church operating budget, you can make a gift to our Compassion Fund, which will helps address the growing tangible needs of the most vulnerable in our congregation, our city, and globally.

Thank you for your faithfulness in generosity, prayer, and service. We have been overwhelmed by the eagerness of our church family to give, reach beyond themselves, and continue growing as followers of Jesus. Together we will become stronger as we face these trials together. If you need anything, please connect with us.

Grace and Peace to you,
