In 1983, Richard and Brenda Harman felt a pull towards full-time ministry. They had a passion for making the gospel available to every tribe and every tongue, and through Wycliffe Bible Translators, they took a leap of faith. With their two young children, they moved to Indonesia beginning this journey with excitement to be a part of the team committed to making Scripture available to millions of people around the world.
Indonesia is a hub of more than 700 languages — the Bible translation team that Richard and Brenda were a part of for 16 years had their work cut out for them as they worked diligently to make God’s Word available to all. They celebrate that now 80 language communities have gained access to the New Testament, 34 with complete Bibles, and 68 with Scripture portions.
Since 2001, the couple has worked with mission leaders from around the world to equip them to fully live out God's call on their lives as they participate in the Bible translation movement. They are astonished and amazed at the 3,300 languages the Bible is now translated in and are honored to play a role in allowing people to hear the good news of Jesus. They explain, “God is at work in mighty ways to transform lives through the power of His Word as people encounter the truth of the gospel in their own language.”
As they wrap up their 35th year of ministry, they feel the Lord bringing them into a new season of rest. Entering retirement has allowed them to reflect and rejoice on the faithfulness of God throughout the journey He has brought them through. They want to thank HP Pres for supporting them through encouragement, prayer, and donations as they participated in the translation movement. We celebrate with them the incredible work the Lord has done and praise God for their willingness to follow His calling! Find out more about our missionaries at hppres.org/missionaries.
